Open call: suunnittele uusi tulkinta työvaatteesta

Tampereen alueella toimivia tekstiilisuunnittelijoita sekä muotoilijoita kutsutaan mukaan kansainväliseen Metamorphosis of Workwear -hankkeeseen. Tavoitteena on luoda uusia työvaatteita, joissa yhdistyvät tehdaskaupunkien pitkät perinteet ja tämän päivän haasteet. Mukaan voi hakea 14.4. mennessä. Hankkeessa on mukana kuusi kaupunkia: Chemnitz, Łódź, Gabrovo, Manchester, Mulhouse ja Tampere. Vetovastuussa on Saksan Chemnitz, jonka kulttuuripääkaupunkivuoden ohjelmaan projekti kuuluu. Tampereella paikallisena yhteistyötahona on Työväenmuseo Werstas. Hankkeeseen mukaan valituille on luvassa rahapalkkio, kahden päivän workshop ideoiden kehittelyyn ja mahdollisuus esitellä valmiita vaatteita osana kansainvälistä näyttelyä. Hankkeen työkieli on englanti. Lue lisää alta:

Open Call ‘Metamorphosis of Workwear’ or the stories workwear tell

The project ‘Metamorphosis of Workwear’ explores the connection between workwear, industrial culture and transformation in former industrial cities. Inspired by the Dresden based artist Wiete Sommer, the history of industrialisation and its transformation is made visible in an international art project funded by the European Union.

18 artists will design individual workwear pieces, each reflecting the industrial history as well as the current and future development of the cities of Chemnitz, Łódź, Gabrovo, Manchester, Mulhouse and Tampere. Accompanying workshops, performances and an exhibition will be organised to collect and present the different perspectives on the world of work and the changes in the cities.

The project runs from November 2024 until June 2026 and is a cooperation project between the Chemnitz Museum of Industry, the Central Textile Museum in Łódź and the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Center in Gabrovo. A performance and an exhibition will be shown at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry in 2025 and in 2026 in Lodz and Gabrovo. The aim is to capture the transformation of the cities artistically and through the voices of the local community.

With this project, we want to make another dimension of the so-callled ‘European Manchesters’ visible alongside the ‘Tales of Transformation’ exhibition in 2025, when Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture, and present both artistic voices and those of the local people.

Project

For Tampere, we are looking for three designers to take part in a two-day workshop to explore the city’s industrial heritage and design a workwear piece. The reinterpretation of the „Blaumann“ is to be realised through a combination of historical research, collaboration with local partners in the field of textiles and new technologies as well as the use of local material depots and recycling possibilities. Another aspect of the project is the transformation of work environments and methods, which is why the work is also intended to take a look into the future.

The workshop consists of three online meetings and two full-day on-site meetings at Taito Pirkanmaa (12 and 13 June 2025). The working language will be English.

The online meetings (about 2h) will start in May 2025. For the first meeting on 6 May from 17:00 to 19:00 you will prepare a five-minute presentation about your previous work. We will set the dates for the other online meetings together. They will serve to get to know each other and to exchange individual research results, which each participant presents on the online platform Miro (Miro will be our tool for collaboration and sharing ideas and designs). The first drafts are then sketched. In the research phase, we will focus thematically on industrialisation, specifically on the textile industry and new work environments.

The drafts will be discussed and further developed during the two days at Taito Pirkanmaa. The aim is to have a completed design at the end of the on-site sessions, which will then be realised individually. The work should be gender-neutral. For the presentation of the outfits, we use simple shoes that are identical for all works. The design is handed over to the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas by 14 July 2025 to be sent to the Chemnitz Museum of Industry.

The artists are expected to take part in the network meeting of all 18 artists from the six cities on 19 September 2025 and the performance on 20 September 2025 – both at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry. A travelling allowance of 500 Euros will be granted.

Aim

The aim of the project is to use workwear as a communicative tool to impart knowledge and tell stories. Public presentations of the work results are an integral part of the programme.

Realisation

The work will be part of a collection that will be realised by a total of 18 artists. This collection will be presented as part of performances and an exhibition in Chemnitz, Lodz and Gabrovo. We also aim to present the collection at the Fashion Weeks in Paris and Berlin. There will be a video of the performance, fashion photographs, a publication and extensive online coverage of the project. The programme promotes the combination of artistic practice, education and the use of new technologies.

Each participant will receive a fee of 1,000 euros for their participation. The workwear pieces will remain in the collection of the Chemnitz Museum of Industry and will be used for future presentations. In addition the artists will receive a travel allowance of 500 euros for their participation in the network meeting on 19 September 2025 and the performance on 20 September 2025 at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry.
