Dorothea Lange’s photographs tell the story of US citizens affected by the Great Depression.
The Great Depression started with the the stock market crash and lasted through the 1930s, causing mass unemployment, poverty and internal migration to California, among other things.
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) is considered one of the pioneers of documentary photography. The picture she took of mother-of-seven Florence Thompson is considered an iconic image of the Great Depression. The photos in the exhibition are from the collection of the Library of Congress.
